STAR WARS TOYS 101 - The “Lost Line” Look

Some history regarding the “lost line” look that Hasbro will be using on 6 of the individual cards included in SDCC Exclusive Carbon Freezing Chamber set (and on Limited Edition chase/variant cards available later at retail). Include in this note are illustration images of this abandoned concept to the iconic 1977-1985 Kenner packaging design we know today.

Concept Sketch for 12-Back Blister Card Kenner had an outside design firm aid them in the creation of their Star Wars blister cards. The images you see on this page show a sketch dating from the earlier stages of this design process. As you can see, it features the "crawling" version of the Star Wars logo, a version that appeared on quite a few licensed products during the late-1970s.

Here's a closer view. As you can see, the logo features a colorful blend of blues. Actually, blue is the predominant color of the sketch, being present in the figure area as well as around the border of the blister card.

A still closer view. The image of Luke, based on the conceptual model of the figure seen here, is supposed to represent the action figure as it would appear on the card, not a printed image. The area on the card directly behind the figure is occupied by a blue star. This probably is an upshot of the concept sketch for the blister card back seen here, which utilizes a system for identifying figures that's based on color-coded stars. Also note the presence of the Kenner and "Long Play" logos towards the lower left corner. This is the only one of these sketches that includes these details.
These logos are located in a smallish square, which I think was meant to feature some kind of character-specific photo, possibly a shot of Luke on Tatooine. The background, featuring an X-Wing soaring against a starry background, was probably envisioned as being standard throughout the line.

Here you see the main logo. It's pierced by a rather large variation on the Luke-and-Leia logo made famous by the Hildebrandt brothers. As you well know, this logo did end up being featured on the 12-back blister card; it was simply reduced in size and moved to the left of the Star Wars emblem.

Finally, here's a close-up of the inset which appears in the lower right corner. I believe this is an alternate idea for the figure area. As you can see, a pencil-drawn note refers to the blue border around the figure as emulating "neon tubes," an idea that is probably related to the steel-like bars which appeared on the finished product. In place of the star background is a simple light-colored glow. There is also a note which refers to this, but it's not visible in this photo.

Here's some pics from NY Tofair 2012

Just imagine, if these design were chosen for the original 12backs instead in the 70s things would somehow be different now..totally mindf**ked :)

The Official Singapore Star Wars POTF2 Launch. Takashimaya 17th -21st November 1995

Just thought of sharing this. I remember back then how excited I was reading an article in Tomarts that Kenner (even tho they were already bought over by Tonka then Hasbro) was making Star Wars toys again.  The only way we could get them at that time was to order it at local Comic shops here through "Previews" (Diamond Previews). After nearly a year I saw an ad in the paper regarding the launch & I went crazy. I even took time off away from work to be there on the first day. To my surprise there was'nt even a crowd there & then I realised that Star Wars was not as hot as Batman back in the early 90s. Went there with a couple of frens (Akai & Hussein of 4-SIDES) & we could actually take our own sweet time to checkout the stuff there. There was a presentation where Takashimaya flew in 2 original Stormtrooper costumes & they would re-create a scene, that too did'nt gather a crowd (trust me,that was considered a big deal for us Star Wars fans back then). They had an on the spot contest where U could win a $100 voucher each & we took advantage of it since no one really knows the basic questions about Star Wars to win the prize. I was actually asked "who is the villain in black in Star Wars?" hahaha. I guess U know the story by now. We ended with $300 vouchers & spend it all there the same day. Best of all I scored a Mexican box Tie-Fighter & 2 Boba Fett errors. One without painted gloves, the other figure & bubble was placed exactly in the middle of the card.

*Most probably the first pic taken with a Stormtrooper
(my kid brother did got a picture taken with a Stormtrooper at the old Metro Beach Rd in 1977 when he was 5 )

answering the $100 question :)

curious buyers

View from the top, practically a ghost town :)

One of the most memorable day in my collecting years, reason is, after the special edition movie came out & the craze started a year later, things got crazy & out of hand. There was another Star Wars promotion there & ppl actually fought to get the figures. I remember some guys got pushed & in turn knocked the display units which fell like dominoes. Alot of figures got crushed. We'll we're all guilty of being crazy when it come to toys ;)

I'm back & I have a valid excuse!!

Reason why I suddenly disappeared like everything else, Facebook is to blame!! In a good way that is. We now havea  3 year old FB group page turned "Like" page which is very active. To cut the story short, I advise all of you to add yourselves there (link below), at the same time I will be updating this blog too. So keep your eyes peel for tiny inhabitants to GIANTS!!
